Your Fitness Journal

When asked the question, What is the best way to stay motivated? I always look to my log or journal. In one of my previous posts, I spoke about rewarding yourself with anything other than food. Well, one of my rewards was an old fashioned leather bound journal (I just love that vintage look!). I’ve been using that journal to write in different notes about my eating habits and exercises.

On a daily basis, here’s what I’ve included:

  • How I felt waking up, and about how much I slept the night before
  • My energy level throughout the day –am I lethargic? do I have headaches? or am I an energetic firecracker?
  • What I ate for breakfast, and what I’ve planned to eat for the rest of the day –and if I stuck to those plans
  • What workouts  I completed for the day –and what I plan for tomorrow
  • What challenge popped up –did someone offer desserts at work? pressure you to a potluck? try to sell you candy? convince you to take the elevator with them rather than stairs?
  • And how did you handle that challenge –did you stand up to it, or fall down? If you didn’t stand your ground -what will you do next time that challenge arises?
  • At the end of your entry, remind yourself of your main goal, and what you can do tomorrow to get one step closer to that goal.

Why does Journaling help?

Looking back on any mistakes you’ve made throughout the day helps you to pinpoint the cause of it so that you could avoid these mis-steps in the future.

Furthermore, reading back on previous days is not only therapeutic, but it’s also a great motivation to keep going in the right direction. The second I feel unmotivated, I just crack open that journal and read back some of my entries -I notice how enthusiastic about reaching my goal I was at some point, and it’s a great way to get back into that mindset.

So don’t just lift weights -lift a pen/pencil and get to writing! 🙂

Much Love,
