Banana Ice-Cream

This is among my favorite healthy recipes! Great to cool off on a warm day, or to enjoy slowly during the cool winter evenings.

It is healthy enough to make for breakfast as the base of a smoothie bowl, and yet sweet enough to indulge that sugar craving that’s been calling to you all week long.

The best thing about this recipe is that it’s a great alternative for lactose intolerant ice cream lovers like myself, and it’s free of artificial or added sugars!

No Ice Cream Maker needed -and only two ingredients!

You just can’t ask for a more simple recipe!



What You Need


  • 1 large ripe banana -the riper it is, the sweeter and smoother it will be!
  • 1 tsp. Vanilla Extract
    • Optional flavors listed at the bottom of this post!



  • Knife
  • Cutting board
  • Freezer-safe container -A flat cookie pan or freezer friendly ziplock bag should be just fine
  • Small Blender or food processor




  1. Start with bananas: Make sure they’re as ripe as possible. Peel the bananas and cut them into round slices: try not to slice them too thick.
  2. Put the bananas in a A freezer-safe glass bowl, or you can use a freezer bag (if you’re freezing overnight). I personally like to spread out all of the slices on a cookie baking sheet so that the slices freeze evenly and throughout.
  3. Freeze the banana pieces for at least 2 hours:Freeze for at least 2 hours, or overnight. I prefer slicing the bananas the night before to ensure they’ll be frozen enough.
  4. Blend the frozen banana pieces in a blender or processor: Pulse the frozen banana pieces until they’ve broken down, then simply blend you’ve reached a smooth, ice-cream-like consistency -depending on the power of your blender/processor this may take anywhere between 2-7 minutes of blending.
  5. You can eat the ice cream immediately; it will be soft enough to serve. If you prefer it to be more solid, just place it back in the freezer. You can also freeze the left-overs for tomorrow -assuming there’d be any! 🙂

NOTE: I like to triple the recipe and indulge! For many people one banana is simply not enough for this ice cream recipe. But I made the recipe per 1 banana for those who are curious and just want to try it out. Use as many bananas as you like! I’ve been making it with at least 3 bananas and eat it all in one sitting -it’s that good!

Feel free to add any of these ingredients to personalize your serving, and flavor it just the way you like!:

  • Vanilla extract
  • Almond Extract
  • Orange extract
  • Cinnamon
  • Nutmeg
  • Dark Chocolate Chips
  • Mix in cocoa powder for chocolate ice cream
  • Fold in some vegan caramel and chopped walnuts for added texture
  • Raw Honey
  • Mix in other berries with the banana for a berry flavor
  • Sub Watermelon for the Banana for a nice sorbet!
